Large, Short, Fat, Skinny, Dark-skinned, Light-skinned, Good hair, Nappy hair, Ghetto-Fabulous, Uppity, Slow, Limited Potential

These are some of the popular expressions that today’s print and online resources use to characterize the average black girl.  Mainstream teen magazines do little to attract the attention of the average black girl while popular black women’s magazines cater only to the mature black woman.  What happens when this group is either inaccurately portrayed on a limited scale or completely omitted from representation?  The average black girl is left to fend for herself…searching for self-identity and a place to belong that closely resembles the world she actually lives in.
